Job 42:1-6

Job

42 Then Job replied to the Lord:

²“I know that you can do all things;^(A)
    no purpose of yours can be thwarted.^(B)
³You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’^(C)
    Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,
    things too wonderful for me to know.^(D)

⁴“You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak;
    I will question you,
    and you shall answer me.’^(E)
⁵My ears had heard of you^(F)
    but now my eyes have seen you.^(G)
⁶Therefore I despise myself^(H)
    and repent^(I) in dust and ashes.”^(J)

Job 42:10-17

New International Version

¹⁰After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes^(A) and gave him twice as much as he had before.^(B) ¹¹All his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before^(C) came and ate with him in his house. They comforted and consoled him over all the trouble the Lord had brought on him,^(D) and each one gave him a piece of silver^[a] and a gold ring.

¹²The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. ¹³And he also had seven sons and three daughters. ¹⁴The first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third Keren-Happuch. ¹⁵Nowhere in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job’s daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers.

¹⁶After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. ¹⁷And so Job died, an old man and full of years.^(E)

⁴⁴and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. ⁴⁵For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,^(A) and to give his life as a ransom for many.”^(B)

Blind Bartimaeus Receives His Sight^(C)

⁴⁶Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. ⁴⁷When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth,^(D) he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David,^(E) have mercy on me!”

⁴⁸Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

⁴⁹Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”

So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” ⁵⁰Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.

⁵¹“What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.

The blind man said, “Rabbi,^(F) I want to see.”

⁵²“Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.”^(G) Immediately he received his sight and followed^(H) Jesus along the road.
