Why Warden?

A Vicar, a Licenced Lay Minister, and 2 Wardens walk into a Beer Festival...

Hello everyone,
This week our opening words come from Dan, one of our faithful church wardens. You might know that Sandra & Dan both come to end of their terms next May, so we wanted to capture a glimpse of the role.

“It's an honour and a privilege to be a churchwarden, as it's such an important role within the church. Not only am I serving the community of Calverley and the congregation of St. Wilfrid’s, but also serving God in a different way.

I am a morning person, always up early, and I enjoy leaving the house early on a Sunday morning while the rest of the family are asleep, and arriving at church to meet up with Sandra, Rob, and the rest of the team to have that time together before the service.

I enjoy people arriving for the service and seeing all those familiar faces and welcoming them into church. Everyone knows who I am and my role within the church, and I quite often have people come and talk to me and make a point of thanking me for what I do – it always feels nice to be appreciated.

I look forward to those special times of year and those special services that we do such as Easter and Remembrance Sunday and playing a part in organising the services, but my favourite time which I always look forward to at church is at Christmas - helping to organise all the Christmas services that we do, setting up and decorating the Christmas tree and nativity set, spending time in church between the services watching the band practice, and setting up church for the next service – it makes Christmas feel even more special.

I will miss being churchwarden, but it’s time for someone else to become churchwarden and continue to serve Calverley & St. Wilfrid’s church, and perhaps sometime in the future I could once again become churchwarden.”

Huge thanks to Dan for all his work, and for sharing the joy and privilege he has found in the role. You never know, perhaps this is something God is calling you to?
- Rob

Sad News
It is with sadness that we have to let you know that Gordon Lightfoot died.
His funeral will be in St. Wilfrid’s next Wednesday 19th October at 10:30am, all are welcome.

Sunday Morning Services
This Sunday, join us for worship in church at 9:15am or 11am. We're looking forward to our Tuesday Afternoon Group (TAG) Group leading proceedings on the theme of 'Faith in Later Life'. Whatever your age, you are always welcome!

As usual, we will be serving tea & coffee between services. Moving forward, as a church seeking to treasure creation and minimise our impact on the environment, we encourage you to Bring Your Own Mug (BYOM) each week.
Unfortunately, we are unable to store your mugs due to lack of space.
Once the paper cups run out, we will not be purchasing any more, and only have small cups. So don’t forget, BYOM please!

Also, as the temperature outside begins to drop and energy prices rise, there may be times when the heating is turned down a notch to try and save money.
Please bear this in mind and wear an extra layer or your big coat. You could even bring a hot-water bottle or a blanket, and we’ll have a few to borrow too!

Go Deeper
Our new 'Go Deeper' notes are a chance to look at issues from that week’s sermon in some more detail, and to help us engage with how our faith and our lives work together. If you would like to receive these weekly notes by email, please click here to sign up.

This week they are particularly short of the following items: adult toothbrushes, long-life fruit juice, tinned tomatoes, coffee, and steamed puddings. They are also in desperate need of volunteer drivers. For more information, please click here. Information about getting help from the foodbank is also now available in church.
