Puppies & Programming

The next great saga in Vicarage Life, the ongoing drama in which I find myself cast, is the arrival of Fudge’s six puppies last week. It’s been chaotic, exhausting, uplifting, traumatic, surprising, and delightful. All of life is here, in squeaky miniature. I have been amazed at the capacity creation builds into animal instinct, from Fudge knowing to lick them clean at birth, and how to feed them, all without ante-natal classes, to the blind and deaf pups finding their way to teats when they need to. It’s quite awesome to behold.

As we reposition them and weigh them, snuggle and care for them, do these tiny puppies, blind and deaf as they are, have any real sense of who is loving them? What is their sense of Fudge, or the big human hands that appear as if from nowhere. It reminded me of our relationship to God - so far beyond our senses that even the theological ramblings of a vicar are like instinctive snufflings. It gives me hope, that the things which are beyond me are in bigger, wiser hands.

Let me leave you with this quote...

“The grace of God means something like: Here is your life. You might never have been, but you are because the party wouldn't have been complete without you. Here is the world. Beautiful and terrible things will happen. Don't be afraid. I am with you. Nothing can ever separate us. It's for you I created the universe. I love you. There's only one catch. Like any other gift, the gift of grace can be yours only if you'll reach out and take it.
Maybe being able to reach out and take it is a gift too.”
- Frederick Buechner.

God Bless,
Rob
