Make A Joyful Noise

Dear friends,
Many of us, this weekend, will be celebrating the Coronation of King Charles III. Most people will not have witnessed a coronation of a British head of state in their lifetime and the celebration promises to be a spectacular event of pomp and ceremony, but also of deep meaning and significance with Charles III also being the head of the Church of England.

To a musician or music lover, a Coronation is a very significant event as it is so often the motivation for new music to be written. There are many examples of this, Handel wrote Zadok the Priest for the Coronation of George II, Elgar wrote The Pomp and Circumstances Marches, Walton the Crown Imperial, Parry I was glad and many more. Imagine how much music has been written for coronations since Henry II, who was on the throne when St. Wilfrid’s was first built in 1154! Lots of this music is still performed independently and at coronations. For the coronation this year, Charles III has commissioned 12 pieces of music which will consist of six orchestral, five choral and one organ commission, all ‘specially composed for the occasion by world-renowned British composers whose work includes Classical, Sacred, Film, Television, and Musical Theatre’. Buckingham Palace has now announced the names of the 12 new compositions, explaining that as a ‘life-long music enthusiast and champion of the arts, His Majesty has overseen, influenced and been personally involved in the commissioning process and the detail of the music programme, which will showcase and celebrate musical talent from across the United Kingdom and further afield.’

At St. Wilfrid’s, we embrace all styles of music and worship music, ranging from traditional, organ based, hymns at our 9:15 service to modern worship songs at the 11AM service. We join together for festivals at 10AM where we celebrate together, as families do. This weekend will be one such service and we do hope to welcome as many members of the church community and wider community as possible. Cream teas will be served afterwards, if that helps!

I do hope you manage to enjoy some of the Coronation music.
I will be attempting Zadok the Priest at the end of the service on Sunday and our fantastic bell ringing team are attempting a 3-hour peal of the Church bells on Monday to ‘Ring for the King’! Let's hope, whether you are fans of the monarchy, or not, we can get together with our community and make the weekend a positive community (and national) event.

On another ‘note’, we are planning to ‘Sing For The King Of kings!’ on Sunday 25th June, with a Songs of Praise service in the evening, which will include The St. Wilfrid’s singers, details to follow.

Blessing,
Jonathan

The Kings Coronation Weekend
It’s another 'All-In@10' Joint Service this Sunday. Lead by Rob and with Richard preaching, there’ll be something from both services and something for all ages, including communion. The children will be staying in, and after the service cream teas will be served. Do come and join us!

Ring For The King
You may have noticed the bells ringing more frequently & for longer recently, this has been in preparation for ‘Ring For The King’ - taking place on Monday 8th May, the bellringing team will ring a full peal, beginning at 10am, this will last about 3 hours but, if successful, it will be only the second peal this millennium! Whether or not they are successful is down to a large number of factors: They aim to ring 5040 changes - this is all the changes possible on 7 bells - each change takes about 2 seconds to ring. The method is known as 'Grandsire Triples' and was devised around 1650. The composer, Joseph J Parker, published the peal in the late 19th century. Bell 8 (known as the Tenor bell) does not change but rings in last place throughout, providing a clear rhythm for the other bells and for those listening. The tenor bell weighs 10 cwt and 10 lbs (513 kg) and sounds note G - it could well be the heaviest musical instrument in Calverley!
If successful, this will be the 116th peal on the bells. The first was in 1774.
The peal band (in likely ringing order) will be:
Cindy Maude (Wakefield Cathedral), Ringing Master: Maurice Calvert (St. Wilfrid, Calverley), Jane Lynch (All Saints, Bingley), Peter Kirby (St. Matthew, Lightcliffe), Carole Kirby (St. Matthew, Lightcliffe), Daniel Calvert (Emmanuel, Plymouth), Andy Sutherland (All Saints, Ilkley), Covering: Andrew Paterson (St. Wilfrid, Calverley).
We are blessed and thankful to have the team marking this historic event at St. Wilfrid’s. We’ll let you know how they got on next week!
