J.O.Y!

I have recently had a time where I have had to stop, isolate and rest.
This follows a week of doing the opposite – busy going out and about here and there. This got me to thinking no matter how I feel – God is the same.
No matter what is happening, good or bad – God is the same, busy or not doing much - God is the same.

His love is unchanging and is not dependent on us, how we feel, what we're doing, or what is going on in our life. The church recently celebrated Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit to us all to enable us, to help us, to empower us, to teach us. Of course, the Holy Spirit is not just for Pentecost but for every day.

I like to ask God to fill me with his Holy Spirit every day, to renew me, refresh me and to enable me to love myself and then to love and serve others. I have to ask him to fill me up again the next day, and the next.

Our church is an opportunity to serve God. In fact, we are part of the body of Christ and if we do not use our spiritual gifts then God might just ask someone else to do the thing he needs doing. Someone once said to me – if God wants me to do something for him then I feel I must do it because if I don’t, he may ask somebody else, and I don’t want him to do that.
I have just said that it doesn’t matter what we are doing (or not), God still loves us and I think that is true but when we have a living faith, we are given a desire to serve somehow, and it is up to us to do this to help extend God’s kingdom. If we don’t do it who will? If we don’t tell, how will they know?

To make the body of Christ here in Calverley strong and fruitful for God, we all need to play our part if we are able and not leave it to someone else.
Is God asking you to serve at church somehow? Why not ask Him?
Then find out how you can do it. They say it is better to give than to receive, but when we give for God, we do receive joy in our hearts from Him. Win! Win!

Jesus Others Yourself - in that order!

Love in Christ,
Pauline Corbin

Ring for the King
On Bank Holiday Monday 29th May, the bell ringing team successfully completed a full peal! Ringing Master, Maurice Calvert reports:
In bellringing a row (or change) is rung when every bell sounds.
"Triples" is rung on 7 bells with the heaviest (the 8th or tenor) bell ringing last in every row, providing a steady rhythm for those listening.
3 pairs of bells swap between every change (hence the name, Triples).
On 7 bells, there are 5040 different changes and ringing all of these consecutively without repeat and without pause by a single band of 8 ringers is called a "peal". Each change takes approximately 2 seconds to ring and, at this speed, a peal would take 2 hours 48 minutes. In fact, we took 2 hours and 56 minutes! This is only the second peal on St. Wilfrid's bells this millennium.
It is the 116th peal in the tower and the 113th since the current bells were installed in 1860. It is the 7th peal of Triples and the 3rd of Grandsire Triples.
Congratulations to all involved in this historic event!

Commonwealth War Graves Week
Last week was Commonwealth War Graves Week, an annual event organised by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC). Events are held at their sites around the world and they invite people to discover more about their work, learn about the world war history in their local area, and remember the stories of the 1.7 million men and women of the Commonwealth commemorated at CWGC cemeteries and memorials around the world.
Did you know here at St. Wilfrid’s there are 17 Commonwealth War Graves from both WW1 and WW2? If you would like to find out more about the Commonwealth War Grave Commission, and the fallen they commemorate, go online to cwgc.org. On their site you can search for Calverley Churchyard and find more details on the fallen who lay to rest in here.
Thanks to Josette Ward for all this information.
