The Shape of Things to Come?

Phew! Hopefully by the time you are reading this, we have all had a time to cool down from the extraordinary high temperatures we experienced at the beginning of the week, wasn’t it hot? A result of climate change, a taste of things to come for future generations, who knows?

It reminds me of the title of one of HG Wells books - ‘The Shape of Things to Come’ published in 1933 it describes how Europe endures a long economic slump, and a major war that leaves Europe devastated and threatened by a plague (Familiar?) After years of chaos with much of the world going back to living in medieval conditions, civilization is eventually rebuilt.
A benevolent dictatorship is set up, paving the way for world peace by abolishing national divisions, enforcing the English language, promoting scientific learning, and outlawing religion! The enlightened world-citizens can depose the dictators peacefully and go on to breed a new race of super-talents, able to maintain a permanent utopia.

All fiction of course, but read in today’s context of Covid, Ukraine, the worldwide economic downturn, and climate change, and you can't help thinking is God showing us something? The Old Testament has numerous examples of prophetic utterances not least those of the Prophet Isaiah he advised his people to be dependent on God guidance and protection and ends with a message of hope and comfort.

‘Behold I will create new heavens and a new earth.
The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.
But be glad and rejoice for ever in what I will create.’

We may not know what the future holds, but we know who holds the future.
Amen.
John Corbin

Sunday Service Times
This Sunday 24th we come to the end of our trial period for service times.
A decision has yet to be made on service times for September onwards however, throughout August we will be having just one Sunday Service at 10am. We're very grateful to everyone who took time to complete a survey. Findings to be published soon!

Dogs
The question of dogs attending Sunday services was raised and taken to the PCC, and the decision was made that dogs will not be allowed in church during Sunday services unless they are an assistance dog or therapy dog.
This is to allow all those attending Sunday services to feel at ease and comfortable. We hope you understand our reasoning and continue to come without your dogs. We will sometime in the future have a Special Pet Service where all God’s creatures will be made very welcome!
