Pride

I wonder what this flag means to you?

They are funny things flags, they carry a lot of different meanings.

This rainbow is one of the versions of the Pride Flag, a rainbow flown by and in support of the LGBTQ+ community since 1978. It has always represented the diversity within that community, and I have always found it to be a beautiful and optimistic symbol.

It will be flown all over Leeds tomorrow at the Pride Parade, worn on clothes, painted on faces, stitched on bags, chalked on pavements – thousands of individual acts each with their own meaning.

I wonder what it means to you...

When I see it on a church, or someone’s social media profile, I know what it means to me. Among all the many other meanings – the celebration the rainbow people of God, the wonder of all of us who are made in God’s image (that’s all of us!) – above and beyond all that, it means welcome.
This place, this person, offers a safe space, offers inclusion. Refuge, if you like. And churches have been a place of refuge and safety since first they were built.

You’ll see it in church on Saturday, as part of our Vigil for Pride.
It will be a sign that, whatever else is going on in life, in the world, in the church – in this place all are loved. All are welcome.
This evening, we’ll be here. Come and join us.
Rob.

Sunday Service Times – 10am during the holidays
Throughout August, the Sunday Service time is 10am.
This will be an intergenerational service with the kids staying in.

From Sunday 11th September – 9:15am & 11am.
The 9:15am will be our Traditional Service with communion, and the 11am will be our Family Service, with Sunday school most weeks except for holidays and the 1st of the month. This will still be communion on 1st & 3rd Sundays, and a worship service on 2nd & 4th. Every 5th Sunday, major festivals, and the summer holidays, we’ll gather for 'All-In @ 10' – a joint service.

Richard Crooks’ Funeral
Richard’s family write the following:
Dad's funeral will be at 11am on 9th August 2022 at St. Wilfrid’s Church, Calverley. Friends from St. Wilfrid's are more than welcome to attend the service. We also extend an invitation to join us at Calverley Golf Club afterwards for a light lunch. I would be grateful if you could let me know if you are attending (the service and more importantly the lunch), by emailing me (Tom) on [email protected], so that we have an idea of numbers for the church and lunch afterwards.

Radio Ga Ga
Our very own ‘Yorkshire Lass’ Pauline Corbin was interviewed by The Voice of Islam Radio on Yorkshire Day to extoll all the good things that living in God’s own country provides. The interview was a result of St. Wilfrid’s connection with The Almadiyya Muslim Women’s Association in Bradford, where a few of our ladies meet with their Muslim friends. If you are interested in learning more about this outreach calling, please have a word with Pauline.

Holiday Club
The 'Big Top' Holiday Club introduces children to five people from the Bible - Samson, Jonah, Elijah, Daniel, & Moses through story, songs, games and crafts. Over the last week, both leaders & children have had great fun together and, if you didn’t know, they can tell you that our vicar makes a very good clown! Click here to see some pictures from the week!

Leeds Pride
Tomorrow is Leeds Pride and Revd. Rob will be showing his support by attending the parade in the city centre with the group Christians at Pride.
If you’d like to join him, please meet in Dortmund Square at 2pm.
We will also be holding a Vigil for Pride this evening, where all are welcome.

God is Love, and those who live in love live in God,
the Bible tells us.

We look forward to a truly inclusive church,
Where prejudices and barriers are torn down,
And all feel welcome in His house.

We celebrate the diversity of mankind,
and the rich tapestry which God has woven.

Whoever you are, wherever you’re coming from, whatever your journey with faith and church, you are welcome to join us between 7-9pm tonight to pray, chat, light a candle, receive a blessing, or simply to find a moment of quiet.

Heritage Events 2022 – 11th & 18th September
St. Wilfrid’s will host two events as part of the National Heritage Week 2022.
The theme is 'Outstanding Inventions' and what better outstanding invention can there be than our recently-restored Binns organ, hand-built by J. J. Binns himself! On Sunday 11th September, there will be a talk and exhibition by Mark Woods, who restored the organ, followed by refreshments, before Jonathan leads a Songs of Praise at 6pm. If you would like to offer any suggestions of hymns, please email [email protected].

The second event on Sunday 18th September will be a guided Heritage Trail at 2:30pm, or you can take a booklet and follow the trail at your own pace.
There will be costumes for children to borrow if they wish. If you enjoy crafts, why not create your own stained glass window or maybe your own coat of arms! The event ends at 4:30pm.
